Times Square was reportedly evacuated after a grenade was discovered in the back seat of an Uber on Saturday as anti-Israel protesters marched their way through New York City, blocking traffic and preventing the bomb squad from reaching the spot.

An Uber driver dropped off a passenger at 42nd Street and 7th Avenue in Times Square, and turned around to notice a grenade in the back seat, police sources were cited by the New York Post.

Several protesters who blocked the traffic were arrested for stopping a police vehicle to reach the cab as it responded to the scene.

A video released by the New York Police Department (NYPD) showed protesters in Times Square blocking a police vehicle, making it difficult for the car to reach the scene. Eventually, the police were successful in establishing a security perimeter around the Uber and the grenade was contained.

“Happy Saturday to all! Except the people who thought it was a good idea to block an NYPD ESU vehicle on the way to a bomb threat call. They will be spending their Saturday where they belong – in jail,” NYPD Deputy Commissioner Kaz Daughtry tweeted.

The police closed off pedestrian and vehicle traffic on 42nd Street in Times Square, the Daily Mail reported.

According to police sources, the grenade was reportedly found to be inert.
