Ahead of International Yoga Day, hundreds of yoga aficionados participated in the event that was addressed by India’s Deputy Ambassador to the United States, Sripriya Ranganathan.

The International Yoga Day event was held at the scenic Wharf in Washington on Wednesday. The event commenced with prayers and Indian classical dance performances. Inspired by ancient Indian practice, the yoga session drew attention to the spirit of oneness and harmony.

After being adopted by the United Nations, International Yoga Day is celebrated across the world annually on June 21. The draft resolution proposing International Day for Yoga was put forward by India and endorsed by a record 175 member states in the UN.

This year’s theme is ‘Yoga for Self and Society’.

Addressing the gathering, Ranganathan highlighted how yoga lights the pathway for the creation of harmony and balance, which is essential for the brighter future of society.

“Since its inception in the Indus Valley Civilization, the timeless practice of yoga has traveled far and wide, and now hundreds of million people around the world still practice yoga after nearly 5000 years,” Ranganathan was quoted as saying in an official media release.
