Singapore Airlines (SIA) has announced compensation and refunds for passengers affected by the severe turbulence encountered on Flight SQ321 from London to Singapore last month.

The SIA has announced $10,000 for passengers with minor injuries and $25,000 as advance payment to those who receive serious injuries and require long-term medical care.

In addition, SIA will provide a full refund of the air fare to all passengers travelling on SQ321 on May 20, including those who did not suffer any injuries.

“SIA can confirm that we have sent out the offers of compensation to the passengers on 10 June 2024,” stated Singapore Airlines in a Facebook post.

The severe turbulence incident on May 21 resulted in one death and injured many.

The widebody Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, carrying 211 passengers and 18 crew members, was forced to make an emergency landing at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport after experiencing extreme turbulence.

Passengers and crew were thrown violently around the cabin due to the turbulence.

“Those with minor injuries will receive $10,000 in compensation. While the passengers with serious injuries, requiring long-term medical care, will be offered an advance payment of $25,000 to address immediate needs. This [advance] will be part of the final compensation that these passengers will receive,” said the flag carrier of Singapore.

Delayed compensation will be provided as per European Union or UK regulations, said the carrier.

Upon their arrival in Bangkok, all passengers were given 1,000 Singaporean dollars to cover immediate expenses.

SIA has also committed to covering medical expenses for injured passengers and arranging for family members to travel to Bangkok if needed.

However, there has been no mention of compensation for the 18 crew members on board Flight SQ321.
