A man of Indian origin has finally come forward to face charges, two years after a fatal collision in Brampton claimed the life of a young woman.

A 27-year-old, Harkamalpreet Singh surrendered to police in Kenora, Ontario, on January 9.

THE FATAL COLLISION

The incident occurred on the morning of November 5, 2021, near the intersection of Sandalwood Parkway and Dixie Road. Singh, allegedly driving a black vehicle erratically, was spotted by an Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer who attempted to pull him over.

However, Singh fled the scene, leading to a brief pursuit that was soon discontinued, reported Toronto CTV News.

Shortly after, Singh’s vehicle collided with a red car, and the 21-year-old woman died. The driver of the red car, Shellome Peart, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Another co-passenger, a 25-year-old, sustained life-threatening injuries and was hospitalised.

SURRENDER AND CHARGES

Singh roamed free for over two years before finally surrendering to the authorities. He now faces several charges related to the crash, including, dangerous operation causing death, flight from a peace officer, and failure to stop at an accident resulting in death, according to a CP24 report.

An investigation has also been launched to look into the officer’s actions in initiating the pursuit.

However, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) concluded that the officer’s conduct did not contribute to the collision and no criminal charges were warranted.
