Over 1,000 pilgrims have died during this year’s Hajj in Mecca, where temperatures soared to 51°C (120°F), according to AFP.

Thousands are being treated for heatstroke. Unregistered pilgrims accounted for over half of the deaths, with 658 Egyptians among the fatalities, 630 of whom were unregistered. India reported 90 deaths, while Jordan, Indonesia, Iran, Senegal, and Tunisia also reported fatalities.

Many pilgrims are missing, with social media flooded with their photos and pleas for information.

Over 1.8 million people are participating in this year’s Hajj, one of the world’s largest religious gatherings, according to the Saudi government.
