A Bangladeshi MP, Anwarul Azim, has been confirmed dead in Kolkata by the West Bengal Police, said a Bangladeshi Minister.
Anwarul, an MP of the ruling Awami League, had come to Kolkata for medical treatment on May 12, following which he was reported to be missing. A general diary was filed by the Kolkata Police on May 18 following his disappearance.
Following the filing of an initial complaint at Kolkata’s Baranagar Police Station, the last location of the Bangladeshi MP was traced near the city’s Newtown area, according to police sources. The three-time MP Anwarul was killed in a flat in the Newtown area, where he went to meet someone, said the police sources.
Anwarul Azim, also the president of Kaliganj Upazila Awami League, went to meet his family friend Gopal Biswas at his home in Kolkata around 7pm on May 12, sources told India Today.
The next day, on June 13, Anwarul left Gopal’s home to visit a doctor at 1:41 pm, saying he had to see a doctor. He also said that he would return in the evening. He boarded a taxi in front of the Calcutta Public School at Bidhan Park.
After leaving, Azim, in the evening, informed his friend Gopal that he was going to Delhi and would call him after reaching there. The lawmaker cautioned his friend not to call him too.
On May 15, Azim in another WhatsApp message informed Gopal that he had reached Delhi and was with VIPs. He also added that there was no need to call him. He forwarded the same message to his personal assistant, Rouf.
On June 17, after Anwarul’s family could not reach him, they called up Gopal, saying they could not contact him. The family filed a police complaint in Dhaka the same day. The MP has been untraceable since then.
During the enquiry, a person confessed before the police in Bangladesh that he had killed Anwarul Azim. The same was conveyed to the police authorities in Kolkata too, police sources told India Today.
However, the dead body has not been recovered from anywhere in Newtown yet.
Further investigation is being conducted by the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate regarding the matter. Subsequently, a search operation has been launched to trace the three-time Awami League MP in Kolkata.
