US President Donald Trump tops the list of world leaders with prolific social media activity, using his platforms to share policy plans, proposed measures, and reactions to fellow leaders. Former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, speaking at the India Today Conclave, decoded the Republican leader’s online presence, saying what needs to be focused is the policies Trump formulates rather than the noise on social media.

Pompeo was discussing the Russia-Ukraine war, the US stance on NATO expansion, and Trump’s policies in the second term as US President, and coincidentally, the Republican leader tweeted about his plans to impose sanctions on Russia for its relentless assault on Ukraine.

India Today’s Consulting Editor, Rajdeep Sardesai, brought up the tweet to Pompeo, who responded by saying, “This is a great example” of the unpredictability of the US President.

“I have no idea what’s in this tweet, but you can’t all put your phones in your pocket for 20 minutes without getting nervous about a tweet,” he said, drawing laughter from the audience.

“That timing is like a killer. I’m going to have to write him a note and thank him,” the former US Secretary of State under the first Donald Trump administration said.

Pompeo asked the moderator to read Trump’s tweet, where he wrote, “Based on the fact that Russia is absolutely ‘pounding’ Ukraine on the battlefield right now, I am strongly considering large-scale Banking Sanctions, Sanctions, and Tariffs on Russia until a Ceasefire and FINAL SETTLEMENT AGREEMENT ON PEACE IS REACHED. To Russia and Ukraine, get to the table right now before it is too late. Thank you!!!”

When asked whether this was a serious statement or merely an attempt to grab attention, and how he generally interprets such tweets from the US President, Pompeo said, “Don’t follow the tweet, but the policy”.

“Here’s how you’ll know if it’s noise. Will sanctions be put in place? Don’t follow the tweet, watch the policy line, right?” Pompeo said, adding, “He’s signalling, right? He’s speaking”.

“He’s negotiating, but what you need to watch is what they actually do,” Pompeo added.

However, at the beginning of his conversation, the former US bureaucrat stated that Donald Trump’s actions and policies are largely a continuation of those from his first term and what he outlined during his campaign for a second term. Pompeo believes that the Republican leader returned to the White House better prepared, and hence making swift decisions.
