Two injured in shooting near ODU campus, suspect at large

At least two people sustained life-threatening injuries in a shooting that took place on Wednesday night in a parking lot on West 49th Street, near Broderick Dining Commons on the Old Dominion University campus, according to the Norfolk Police.

Norfolk Police received a call at around 9:50 pm on Wednesday regarding a shooting in the 1400 block of West 49th Street. According to ODU Police Chief Garrett Shelton, the incident occurred in Parking Lot 3, adjacent to Broderick Dining Commons on the ODU campus.

The ODU Police chief also stated that the victims, who were taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, are neither students nor affiliated with Old Dominion University.

Noel Lipieko, a spokeswoman with the Norfolk Police also emphasized that no students were involved in the incident. “This does remain an active investigation. However, there is no further threat to the community,” she said.

The Norfolk Police has not shared any information regarding the arrested individuals in connection with the incident. Norfolk Police Chief Mark Talbot stated, “We will certainly get the message out when we get ourselves together” and have a handle on what happened.

Campus lockdown lifted at ODU after probe

Meanwhile, the lockdown at ODU has been lifted after police investigated the reported shooting. ODU and Norfolk police confirmed that there is no longer a threat to the campus community.

An ODU Urgent Alert, issued earlier in the evening, had warned of a suspect at large. At the time of writing, there is no update on whether a suspect is in custody.
