Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella on Thursday responded to billionaire tech mogul Elon Musk over the latter’s remarks about Stargate, a USD 500 billion artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure project announced by US President Donald Trump, saying that his investment is for “building useful things for the real world”.
It all started after Musk raised doubts about the Stargate AI project, saying that money promised for the investment actually wasn’t there. “They don’t actually have the money,” Musk wrote on his social platform X. “SoftBank has well under $10B secured. I have that on good authority”.
Responding to Musk’s claims, Open AI CEO Sam Altman said that the X chief was “wrong, as you surely know” and invited him to visit the first site in Texas that is already under construction.
“Wrong, as you surely know. Want to come visit the first site already underway? This is great for the country. I realise what is great for the country isn’t always what’s optimal for your companies, but in your new role, I hope you’ll mostly put [the United States] first,” Altman wrote.
Musk doubled down on Altman’s remarks, retweeting an image of a crack pipe with the caption: “Leaked image of the research tool OpenAI used to come up with their $500 billion number for Stargate”.
Meanwhile, Satya Nadella, whose company has partnered with OpenAI, also shared his views on the Stargate deal. Asked about the spat between Musk and Altman during a CNBC interview, he said, “All I know is, I’m good for my $80 billion. I’m going to spend $80 billion building out Azure”.
Reacting to a clip of Nadella’s interview, Elon Musk wrote, “On the other hand, Satya definitely does have the money”. Nadella replied to Musk’s post and wrote: “And all this money is not about hyping AI, but is about building useful things for the real world”.
The Stargate AI project, which is being co-funded by ChatGPT-maker OpenAI software giant Oracle and Japanese investment firm SoftBank, has been dubbed as “a resounding declaration of confidence in America’s potential” by US President Donald Trump. The project will begin with an initial investment of USD 100, with Masayoshi Son, Oracle’s Larry Ellison, and Altman at the helm.
