Heads of states and political leaders with influence will be a part of US-President elect Donald Trump’s inaugural ceremony on January 20. But there will be another special guest, who will remind many of Trump’s Wisconsin rally in October — the garbage truck. The truck had stickers of the Trump campaign and was a response to US President Joe Biden’s ‘garbage’ remark about Trump supporters.
The controversy began during Trump’s rally at Madison Square Garden, which was marked by comedian Tony Hinchcliffe’s inflammatory comment referring to Puerto Rico as a “floating island of garbage”.
His remark angered Democrats and key Latino voters, especially Puerto Ricans, a significant voting group in the swing state of Pennsylvania.
Biden’s “garbage” comments were made during a virtual rally in support of Kamala Harris, who was running for President after Biden stepped down from the White House race.
However, Harris, an Indian-American politician, conceded the November 5 election to Trump.
During the Wisconsin rally, Trump rode in the passenger seat of the garbage truck to emphasise Biden’s controversial comment.
“How do you like my garbage truck? This truck is in honour of Kamala and Joe Biden,” Trump said while wearing a workman’s vest in the customised garbage truck.
The idea of the garbage truck came as a swift response from Trump’s team to Biden’s remarks.
“One of my people came in and said, ‘Sir, you know, the word garbage is the hottest thing right now. Would you like to drive a garbage truck?'” Trump explained. “And they pulled up this garbage truck – I don’t know how the hell they did it so fast,” he added.
Biden’s “garbage” remarks faced backlash from conservatives, and Harris later distanced herself from Biden’s comments.
“I am strongly against any criticism of people based on who they vote for. I believe the work I do is about representing all the people, whether they support me or not,” Harris said.
The inaugural parade, organised by the Trump Vance Inaugural Committee, will begin at the Capitol Building and proceed down Pennsylvania Avenue to the White House. Approximately 7,500 participants, including veterans’ groups, first responders, marching bands — including an Indian-origin dhol band — and equestrian teams, are expected to take part.
