The US Census Bureau predicted that the United States population would reach 341.1 million on the first day of 2024, growing from an annual 2.6 million or 0.78%. This growth comprises births, deaths, and international migration.

The United States was expected to have one birth every 9 seconds and one death every 9.4 seconds in January 2025. International migration was expected to add one person to the U.S. population every 23.2 seconds. The combination of births, deaths and net international migration will increase the U.S. population by one person every 21.2 seconds, the Census Bureau said.

Growing World Population

In addition, the world is expected to grow by 71.1 million people in 2024. That means that on the first day of 2025, it will total 8.09 billion people, representing a growth rate of 0.89%.

In January 2025, the world is expected to experience 4.2 births and 2.0 deaths every second. This remains substantial but slightly less than last year because of the population increase of 75 million worldwide in 2023.

Tracking the Numbers

The Survey Population Clock gives real-time growth estimates not just for the US but for the world population. For the US, it typically indicates how the population changes by age and sex, as well as regional density reference.

Globally, it shows the top countries by population and the US’s most likely trade partners by population. Short-term population projection updates occur annually, with monthly changes interpolated to ensure accuracy.

Top 10 Most Populous Countries

As of July 2024, the most populous countries were India (1.41 billion), China (1.41 billion), and the United States (336.7 million).
Other nations in the top ten include Indonesia, Pakistan, Nigeria, Brazil, Bangladesh, Russia, and Mexico. The US is expected to remain third in terms of population up to 2025.

Slowing Growth in the U.S.

The US population, over the decade, has grown by almost 9.7 million, which represents an increase of 2.9% this decade. This is a slow rate compared with 7.4% for the 2010s—the lowest rate since the 1930s.
Despite this, the US remains a critical player in global population trends, with its growth driven by a combination of natural increase and international migration.
