An Air Canada flight had a terrifying landing at Halifax airport as the aircraft skidded down the runway and caught fire after touching down with a broken landing gear on Saturday. No casualties have been reported in the incident.
The incident happened when the plane’s landing gear malfunctioned, causing the wing to scrape the runway and ignite a fire. Emergency crews quickly responded to the scene, extinguishing the flames and ensuring the safety of all passengers and crew onboard.
One of the passengers onboard the flight told CBC News that one of the plane’s tyres did not deploy properly upon landing.
“The plane started to sit at about a 20-degree angle to the left and, as that happened, we heard a pretty loud — what almost sounded like a crash sound — as the wing of the plane started to skid along the pavement, along with what I presume was the engine,” she said.
As a precaution, Halifax airport has been temporarily closed.
This incident comes just hours after a Boeing 737 caught fire while landing at South Korea’s Muan airport, resulting in the death of all but two passengers.
A Jeju Air flight veered off the runway and struck a fence while landing at Muan International Airport in South Korea on Sunday. Officials suspect that of the 181 people on board, all except for two people rescued were killed in the crash.
