PM Modi attended the event as the ‘Guest of Honour’ of Kuwait’s Emir, providing an opportunity for informal interactions with Kuwait’s leadership, the Ministry of External Affairs stated in a release.
“Glad to have met His Highness the Amir of Kuwait, Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al Sabah during the opening ceremony of the Arabian Gulf Cup,” the Prime Minister tweeted, sharing a photo with the Kuwait leader.
The Prime Minister also conveyed his best wishes to all the participating countries at the football tournament, which is one of the most prominent sporting events in the region with participation from eight countries, including GCC nations, Iraq, and Yemen.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Kuwait on Saturday morning for a two-day visit, marking the first trip by an Indian Prime Minister to the country in 43 years.
Earlier on Saturday, at a special event titled ‘Hala Modi’ in Kuwait City, he addressed a large gathering of the Indian community, praising their contributions to global progress. Highlighting India’s potential, the Prime Minister stated that the country could become the “skill capital of the world”.
“India is well-equipped to meet the world’s demand for skilled talent. India also has the potential to become the skill capital of the world,” the PM said, adding that the Indian community has “mixed the essence of India’s talent, technology, and tradition in Kuwait”.
He also met a 101-year-old former Indian Foreign Service officer, two Kuwaiti nationals who have translated and published the epics Ramayana and Mahabharata in Arabic. Later, the Prime Minister visited a labour camp with a workforce of around 1,500 Indian nationals.
The Prime Minister is set to meet the Emir, the Crown Prince, and the Prime Minister of Kuwait on Sunday.
