‘Flying naked’ trend leaves internet divided: What is it really?

“Flying naked” is the new travel trend that has been making a buzz on the internet, but there is more to the phrase than what you would think.

Several flyers are now travelling without any carry-on bags or checked-in luggage. Instead, they are travelling with just clothes on their backs and a few necessary items in their pockets.

According to Fox News, the trend has recently gained traction online with people on the internet sharing their experiences of travelling with minimal belongings.

The trend is categorised into three types: “Totally Bare,” where travellers carry only the essentials like a phone, charger, and wallet; “Pocket People,” who fill up their pockets with extra items; and “Delivery Crew,” those who ship their luggage ahead to their destination.

The idea itself is not entirely new since people have been experimenting with the concept for years.

It is now catching on as a way to avoid the stress of baggage fees and the hassle of dealing with lost or delayed luggage, the report said.

One TikTok user described the feeling of flying without a carry-on, calling it “the weirdest feeling” and likening it to simply hopping on a bus to a new city.

Other creators dubbed their journeys “Travelling with No Bags, Just Vibes” and posted videos about their carefree travel experiences.

However, the concept has also left people divided, with many raising objections. One TikTok user commented that traveling without luggage is “insane” and hard to fathom.

There are several benefits to flying with no bags, such as avoiding the stress of finding overhead bin space or worrying about luggage missing a connecting flight. It also eliminates the need to pay extra baggage fees, which cost airlines over $33 billion in 2023.

While the trend may be enticing to some, it also comes with challenges. After arriving at their destination, some travelers opt to buy new clothes, while others deal with the dilemma of shipping their new items home. Either way, “flying naked” is certainly dividing opinions.
