A 48-year-old Indian-origin man has been found guilty of murdering his 76-year-old mother at their family home in Leicester, UK. Sindeep Singh attacked his mother fatally after a dispute over the family home, which he believed had been left to him by his late father. Singh was sentenced to life imprisonment on December 16 and must serve at least 31 years before being considered for release.
According to Leicestershire Police, Singh intended to bury his mother’s body in the garden. The house had been cleaned, and there was a strong smell of disinfectant, providing clear evidence of Singh’s plan to dispose of the body.
Before this incident, Sigh’s mother, Bhajan Kaur, had reported him for his behaviour. He was arrested on suspicion of controlling and coercive behaviour and released on bail while those enquiries were ongoing.
The murder of Singh’s mother came to light on the evening of May 13 when relatives, unable to reach Kaur, visited the property and found her body.
Kaur had sustained severe injuries to her head and face. A 999 call was made, and when officers arrived, they discovered a large hole dug in the rear garden, suggesting an attempt to bury the body, according to Leicestershire Police.
Police arrested Singh shortly afterward near the scene.
Initially, he provided false details and claimed to be someone else, but further investigations confirmed his identity.
Singh also claimed that he had no knowledge of the incident when he was arrested on suspicion of murder.
The further investigation revealed that Singh, who had been living in his car on the driveway, was let into the house by Kaur earlier that day.
CCTV footage showed him leaving the property later and going to purchase a sack barrow and spade from a nearby shop.
He returned to the house but was interrupted in his attempts to dispose of the evidence when relatives arrived and found the body, according to Leicestershire police.
Due to previous contact between the police, Kaur and Singh, the matter was referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC). The IOPC conducted an independent investigation, resulting in two officers receiving individual learning, according to Leicestershire Police.
