A Ford Mustang adorned with colourful Christmas lights turned heads in Wyoming, but not all the attention was welcome. The Wyoming Highway Patrol stopped the festive vehicle as it drove down the highway, warning that such decorations are illegal and potentially hazardous.
The Highway Patrol shared a photo of the illuminated Mustang on Instagram, reminding drivers of state laws prohibiting vehicles from displaying red or blue lights visible from the front.
“As the holiday season approaches, we would like to remind you of a Wyoming statue…no person shall drive or move any vehicle or equipment upon any highway with a lamp or device thereon capable of displaying a red or blue light visible from directly in front of the centre or thereof,” the Wyomind Highway Patrol said.
“So, while this might look cool and be festive, we would like to remind you that it is illegal. Please remember to stay safe when celebrating this season!”
Jason Simmer, an official with the Wyoming Highway Patrol, elaborated on the dangers posed by such displays. “Christmas lights on a vehicle can interfere with depth perception and distract other drivers,” he said.
“If there’s an emergency, and you brake, the additional lights can make it difficult for others to notice in time. Curves, hills, and the overall glow of the lights amplify these risks.”
Simmer also highlighted the potential legal and financial consequences. “If an accident occurs because of the lights, it could complicate insurance claims. Someone might argue they couldn’t see the car clearly before the crash, which could leave the driver responsible for damage.”
