A 20-year-old Indian student was shot dead in an apartment in Canada’s Edmonton on Friday, with two suspects arrested and charged with first-degree murder, officials said.

The victim, Harshandeep Singh, who was also working as a security guard, was found dead after a shootout at around 12.30 am on Friday.

The Canadian police on Saturday said they have arrested two accused–Evan Rain and Judith Saulteaux, both 30–and charged them with first-degree murder.

According to police, they reached the 107th Avenue area after reports of gunshots at an apartment building and Singh was found unresponsive. He was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A purported CCTV video of the incident shows an attacker of the three-member gang throwing Singh down the stairs, and shooting him from behind.

The video shows a man and a woman walking down a hallway. The man can be heard shouting as he repeatedly raises and points a large firearm. He then appears to strike someone off-camera several times with the weapon while the woman and another individual stand nearby.

Another part of footage captures the man being pushed down the stairs as the shooter opens fire at him from behind.

However, the police have not confirmed the authenticity of the video.

“On Friday, December 6, at approximately 12.30 am, patrol officers responded to a report of a gunshot inside an apartment building in the area of 106 Street and 107 Avenue. Upon arrival, officers located an unresponsive 20-year-old male security guard Harshandeep Singh in a stairwell and immediately conducted first aid. EMS (Emergency Medical Services) responded, treated and transported him to hospital where he was declared deceased (sic),” Edmonton police said.

The accused, Evan Rain and Judith Saulteaux, were arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with Singh’s death, the police said. Investigators added that they do not believe anyone else was involved in the incident. A weapon was also recovered during the arrest.

The police have not yet determined the motive behind the murder, and the victim’s autopsy is scheduled for Monday.
