The United States pushed for basic fundamental freedoms and human rights for those detained in Bangladesh, and urged the country to ensure appropriate legal representation for them.
US State Department Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel, responding to a question on the arrest of Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das, Patel said on Tuesday, “We continue to stress and emphasise that even those who are in detention need to be afforded appropriate representation and need to be treated with basic fundamental freedoms and human rights.”
His remarks came amid protests in Bangladesh against on minorities, including Hindus. India has also been expressing concerns over attacks on Hindus.
Patel said that the US is “consistent” with every government that it has relations with and that fundamental freedoms should be respected.
“Governments need to respect the rule of law, they need to respect basic human rights as part of that. That’s something we’ll continue to emphasise,” Patel said.
He added that there is a need to respect religious freedom and basic human rights. “Any kind of protests should be and need to be peaceful,” he said.
Chinmoy Krishna Das was arrested on sedition charges while travelling from Dhaka to Chittagong on November 25.
