US President-elect Donald Trump, 78, has not spoken to Russian President Vladimir Putin since his election victory this week, but said, “I think we’ll speak,” according to an interview with NBC. His comments came just after Putin congratulated him and mentioned that Russia is ‘ready’ for a dialogue with the US.

Reports suggested that both leaders will hold a phone conversation after Trump’s win in the US presidential election.

The US President-elect also revealed that he has spoken to about 70 world leaders since Wednesday morning.

Before Trump’s interview on NBC News, the Russian President on Thursday congratulated Donald Trump on his victory and said he is ready to talk to Trump.

The Russian leader said, “Don’t think it’s wrong to hold a call with Trump. If some world’s leaders seek to restore contacts, I’m not against it. We are ready to speak to Trump”.

Putin added that what Trump has said “about the desire to restore relations with Russia, to help end the Ukrainian crisis, in my opinion, deserves attention at least.”

He also said that he was impressed with how Trump handled himself in the moments after an assassination attempt in July, describing Trump as a “brave man”.

“I was impressed by Trump’s behaviour during the assassination attempt. He is brave. He did it right, as a man. Not sure what he will do now,” Putin said.

With US support for Ukraine causing tensions between the two nations, Putin stated that Moscow is open to restoring relations with Washington, but emphasised that the decision now lies with the United States.
