Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris, who has been leading in national polls in the United States, is trailing in international betting markets against her Republican rival, Donald Trump.
The odds are now tilting in favour of Trump, as international betters back his potential return to the White House for a second term, according to a report in Daily Mail.
Trump holds a 51.1% chance of winning the 2024 election, compared to Harris’s 47.6%. This marks a shift, as Trump hadn’t led Harris in these betting averages for more than a month, according to the RealClearPolitics (RCP) average of betting markets.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk also weighed in, posting on X, “Trump now leading Kamala by 3% in betting markets. More accurate than polls, as actual money is on the line.”
Trump’s position in the betting markets is stronger than in national polls, where Harris has an advantage.
Harris became the Democratic frontrunner after President Joe Biden stepped aside and endorsed her. Before that, when Trump was set to face Biden, Trump was leading in some national polls.
Trump’s boost in the betting odds follows a surge in key battleground states during September, particularly in Arizona, Georgia, and North Carolina. This increase in support in these swing states strengthens his chances of winning the necessary Electoral College votes to secure the presidency.
Historically, Trump has had an advantage in the Electoral College.
In the 2020 election, Trump lost Arizona and Georgia to Joe Biden, but carried North Carolina.
On the other hand, Harris holds narrow leads in Nevada, Wisconsin, and Michigan, while Pennsylvania remains a toss-up.
Trump’s frequent visits to Wisconsin, including four stops in just eight days, highlight the importance of swing states in this election.
Among various betting platforms, Trump is now favoured over Harris for the presidency.
With the US presidential election set for November 5, less than a month remains for American voters to decide who will lead the country for the next four years.
