A 71-year-old man in France is on trial for allegedly drugging his wife and inviting dozens of men to rape her over nearly a decade.
Dominique Pelicot is accused of offering his unconscious wife for sex on a website and filming the assaults at their home in Mazan, a town in southern France. Fifty other men are also on trial, facing up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
Pelicot’s wife, now 72, was unaware of the abuse until police informed her four years ago. Her lawyer, Antoine Camus, stated that she has no memory of the rapes, which were discovered after Pelicot was investigated for filming up women’s skirts in a supermarket. Thousands of photos and videos documenting the assaults were found on his devices.
The trial, which began on Monday and will run until December, is being held publicly at the victim’s request. She wants to raise awareness about sexual abuse and the dangers of drug-induced blackouts. Her lawyer, Stephane Babonneau, said she aims to shift the burden of shame onto the perpetrators. Pelicot has admitted to the charges against him.
Although India Today does not name victims of sex crimes, in this instance the woman chose to be identified by her married name, Gisèle Pélicot.
