In Kolkata Doctor Rape-Murder Case, Lie Detector Test Likely Tomorrow: 10 Points

The CBI is likely to conduct a lie-detector test on the accused Sanjay Roy

New Delhi:

  1. Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer who worked in the hospital and who was seen on CCTV leaving the suspected crime scene, is the key accused in the case.
  2. After allowing the lie-detector test, the high court deferred the hearing in the case to August 29.
  3. The CBI also questioned Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, for several hours on Friday and Saturday.
  4. Trinamool Congress MP Sukhendu Sekhar Roy had in a social media post demanded the questioning of Kolkata police chief Vineet Goyal over claims that the college principal initially said the junior doctor died by suicide.
  5. Following the allegation, the Kolkata Police sent notice to the Trinamool MP, which he challenged today by filing a petition in the high court. The court will hear the matter tomorrow.
  6. Another Trinamool leader, however, criticised his party colleague for casting doubt on the police. Trinamool’s Kunal Ghosh said Sekhar Roy’s “protest against the crime is right, but I vehemently oppose his demands.”
  7. The parents of the junior doctor yesterday told NDTV they have lost trust in West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, given the way the police handled the case. “Earlier I had full faith in her (Mamata Banerjee), but not now. She is asking for justice, but what is she saying that for? She is doing nothing,” the father of the murdered doctor told NDTV.
  8. “All the schemes by Mamata Banerjee — Kanyashree, Lakshmir Bhandar — are pseudo. Whoever wants to avail these schemes kindly see if your Lakshmi at home is safe before availing them,” the grieving father told NDTV.
  9. The body of the junior doctor was found in the seminar hall of the medical college and hospital on the morning of August 9. Many suspect there were more than one accused.
  10. The Supreme Court has taken up the case on its own. A bench of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra will hear the case tomorrow.
