A Pakistani-Canadian businessman, who was involved in protests after the death of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, was set on fire by an unidentified man in Canada’s Surrey city in British Columbia province.
Rahat Rao was set on fire by a man aged 24 or 25 years on Friday. He was hospitalised and his condition is critical. According to sources, Rao is not an agent of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), Pakistan’s intelligence agency.
The Canadian Police released a photo of the accused who set fire to Rao.
Rao is very active in Canada and was continuously involved in many protests after the death of Nijjar in June last year.
On June 18 last year, Nijjar was shot dead outside a gurdwara in Surrey. His name had been included in a list released by the Indian government with 40 other ‘designated terrorists’.
His death sparked a major diplomatic row between India and Canada after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau last September alleged a potential involvement of Indian government agents in the killing of the Khalistani terrorist.
India vehemently rebuffed Trudeau’s claims, calling them “absurd” and “motivated”.
Nijjar’s killing is being investigated by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).
