At least 18 people were killed and 30 injured in a series of attacks by suspected female suicide bombers in Nigeria’s northeastern Borno state on Saturday (local time), according to the head of the state’s emergency management agency.
The attacks, targeting a wedding, funeral, and hospital in the town of Gwoza, come amidst a long-running Islamist insurgency in the region.
Borno has been the epicentre of this 15-year conflict, which has claimed thousands of lives and displaced millions.
While the Nigerian military has weakened the militant groups, they continue to carry out deadly attacks on civilians and security forces.
Barkindo Saidu, head of the Borno State Emergency Management Agency, confirmed the deaths, which included children, adults, and pregnant women. He also detailed the severity of the injuries, ranging from internal organ damage to skull and limb fractures.
No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attacks. Authorities are investigating.
Borno state has long been a stronghold for Boko Haram and its splinter group, Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP). These militant groups remain active across the vast rural region.
