A New York City Police Department (NYPD) officer was among four killed when a speeding vehicle rammed into a nail salon in Long Island.
The accident took place when the NYPD cop, identified as Emilia Rennhack (30), was getting her nails done at the salon on Grand Boulevard in Deer Park on Friday for an upcoming wedding, according to a New York Post report.
A car, allegedly driven by a drunken driver, crashed into the shop, hitting Emilia and other customers and employees inside.
The accused, Steven Schwally, 64, was driving a 2020 Chevy Traverse when it smashed through the storefront of the parlour.
According to the report, the vehicle shattered the entire glass storefront and caused the ceiling to collapse.
The accused was taken into custody and later charged with DWI (driving while intoxicated). He was taken to Good Samaritan University Hospital in West Islip with non-life-threatening injuries and will be arraigned at a later date.
Additional charges against him are pending, police said.
“They (victims) were trapped inside. Everybody was inside the salon,” New York Times quoted Deer Park Third Assistant Chief Dominic Albanese as saying to Newsday. “It’s horrible. It’s horrible. It can be tough for the community and tougher for the volunteer fire department, but you know we’re going to get through it,” Albanese added.
Officer Rennhack worked in the 102nd Precinct in Queens, where her husband is also a detective, the report stated quoting sources.
The Police Benevolent Association expressed their condolences on Facebook, stating, “Our hearts are breaking following the tragic loss of our 102nd Precinct sister, P.O. Emilia Rennhack, in an off-duty incident yesterday. Please join us in praying for her family, friends, and coworkers. Funeral arrangements to follow”.
