Last month, Chinese vessels interfered with Philippine boats attempting to evacuate a sick marine stationed on the BRP Sierra Madre, a grounded Philippine vessel at Second Thomas Shoal.
Coast Guard spokesperson Jay Tarriela condemned China’s actions, labelling them unacceptable. This incident adds to tensions between the two countries, which have seen multiple confrontations in the area over the past year.
