In Justin Trudeau’s message to PM Modi, a reference to human rights, rule of law

Following the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) win in the 2024 Lok Sabha election, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trueau sent a congratulatory message to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. However, Trudeau didn’t forget to tinge that with his hyperbole of “human rights and rule of law”. He said his government was ready to advance the relationship between the people of the two countries.

The congratulatory message comes from the official handle of the Canadian Prime Minister, and not Justin Trudeau’s personal account, which he used just a couple of days back to congratulate another leader.

The message for Modi from Trudeau comes against the backdrop of strained relations between New Delhi and Ottawa.

In the congratulatory message, Trudeau underlined his government’s commitment to “peoples — anchored to human rights, diversity, and the rule of law”, in bilateral relations.

“Congratulations to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his electoral victory. Canada stands ready to work with his government to advance the relationship between our nations’ peoples — anchored to human rights, diversity, and the rule of law,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was quoted as saying by the Canadian PM’s office handle on X.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be sworn in on June 9 for his third consecutive term.

Also noteworthy was the fact that Trudeau’s congratulatory message came from his official, not personal, X account.

A day before the 2024 Lok Sabha election results were declared in India, Trudeau had congratulated Mexico’s president-elect, Claudia Sheinbaum, from his personal X handle.

However, a couple of days after the 2024 Lok Sabha election results, the congratulatory message from the Canadian Prime Minister flashed on his official X handle, not his personal one.
