A 23-year-old Indian student who went missing in California last week has been found safe, police confirmed on Tuesday.
Nitheesha Kandula, a student at California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB), had been missing since May 28 in Los Angeles. Her disappearance raised concerns within the community and prompted a police search.
John Guttierez, Chief of Police at CSUSB, announced the news on social media.
“The missing student identified in this bulletin who was reported missing on May 28, 2024, in Los Angeles, has been located and is safe!” Guttierez posted on X, without providing further details about her whereabouts.
Police had previously issued a public appeal for information on Nitheesha’s location.
Police reports further claimed that Kandula was driving a California-licensed Toyota Corolla car.
Nitheesha, from Hyderabad, is among several Indian students in the US who have recently been reported missing.
The Indian community has been alarmed by a series of such incidents.
Last month, 26-year-old Rupesh Chandra Chintakind, another Indian student, went missing in Chicago.
In a more tragic case, Mohammad Abdul Arfath, a 25-year-old student from Hyderabad, who had been missing since March, was found dead in Cleveland in April.
Arfath had come to the US in May of the previous year to pursue a Master’s in IT from Cleveland University.
