Former US President Donald Trump has said that he is “ready to go to jail” after being convicted on all 34 counts of falsifying business records by a New York court, adding that his best revenge would be by winning the Presidential polls scheduled later this year.
Speaking to Fox News after his conviction, he said that he was ‘okay’ at going to jail after the conviction.
“I’m okay with it (going to jail). I saw one of my lawyers the other day on television saying, ‘Oh no, you don’t want to do that to the President’.I said, don’t, you don’t beg for anything. It’s just the way it is,” he said while speaking exclusively to Fox News in a TV interview.
“My revenge will be (a) success (in the Presidential polls),” Trump said in the interview.
The current Republican White House hopeful further warned that his imprisonment would be “tough for the public to take”, adding that “there’s a breaking point”.
On May 31, in a landmark verdict, a panel of 12 Manhattan jurors unanimously convicted the 77-year-old leader for falsifying business records to conceal a USD 130,000 hush money payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels to influence the 2016 presidential election.
Over a six-week trial, the court heard from 22 witnesses, including Daniels, whose alleged sexual encounter with the former president was at the centre of the case.
The sentencing of Trump is scheduled for July 11, four days before the Republican National Convention, where he will be formally nominated as the party’s presidential candidate against incumbent Joe Biden in the Presidential polls that are scheduled later this year.
Trump has termed the court’s judgement a ‘disgrace’, alleging a rigged trial by a “conflicted judge who was corrupt”.
