At least six Indian-origin men have been arrested in Canada as part of a major crackdown on stolen vehicle trafficking. Peel Regional Police concluded Project Odyssey, a seven-month investigation that targeted a large-scale network responsible for stealing vehicles, transporting them across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), and shipping them out of the Port of Montreal. The operation resulted in the recovery of 369 stolen vehicles, valued at $33.2 million.
The investigation led to the arrest of 16 individuals and the laying of 322 Criminal Code charges.
Among those arrested are Beerpal Singh, 29, Harmeet Singh, 34, Valbir Singh, 49, Guljinder Singh, 29, Gurpreet Dhillon, 41, and Jagmohan Singh, 57.
These men face numerous charges, including trafficking in stolen goods over $5000 and conspiracy to commit an indictable offence. Some also face firearm-related charges.
Canadian police identified a company based in Peel Region that was facilitating the transport of stolen vehicles from a trucking yard in Brampton, Ontario.
During the operation, police recovered 369 stolen vehicles valued at $33.2 million, with 255 vehicles found in the Peel Region and 114 recovered at the Port of Montreal.
Additionally, three transport trucks and two bobcats were seized under the forfeiture of offense-related property.
Chief Nishan Duraiappah of Peel Regional Police commended the investigative work of the Commercial Auto Crime Bureau, noting the significant expansion of the unit in 2023.
“In the last 18 months, we have arrested nearly 200 individuals, laid approximately 1,600 auto theft-related charges, and recovered close to $100 million in stolen vehicles,” said Duraiappah.
The investigation has also led to the issuance of 10 additional arrest warrants. The families of the arrested individuals are seeking legal counsel as they prepare for the legal proceedings.
