The grandson of the 39th US President, Jimmy Carter, shared an update on his grandfather’s condition, who has been in hospice care since early 2023. Carter, who is 99, is the longest-living US President.

Carter, who served as President from 1977 to 1981, is also the American President to have seen the longest post-presidency period at over 43 years.

Jimmy Carter has been in hospice care since 2023 at the Rosalynn Carter Symposium on Mental Health Policy.

His wife, Rosalynn Carter — the first lady of the United States from 1977 to 1981 — died in November 2023 at the age of 96.

Grandson Jason Carter recounted a recent visit to his grandfather in Plains a couple of weeks ago, where they watched an Atlanta Braves baseball game together.

During this visit, he asked his grandfather about his well-being, to which Jimmy Carter responded, “Well, I don’t know myself”.

“I said, Pawpaw, people ask me how you’re doing, and I say, I don’t know. And he said, well, I don’t know myself,” said Jason Carter during an event at the Carter Centre in Atlanta, reported the Georgia Recorder.

Jason Carter said he believed his grandfather was “nearing the end”.

“There’s a part of this faith journey that is so important to him, and there’s a part of that faith journey that you can only live at the very end. And I think he has been there in that space,” Jason Carter was quoted as saying by Georgia Recorder.

Jason also mentioned that his grandfather being in hospice care reminded him of the important work Rosalynn Carter did for caregiving and mental health.
