A major highway linking New England with New York was shut on Thursday after a tanker truck filled with gasoline burst into flames in a three-vehicle crash. The accident happened on Thursday, on I-95 in southwest Connecticut, thus causing major traffic jams on the stretch.
No injuries were reported in the incident, even as the crash caused damage to the bridge above it.
Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont said the highway was expected to reopen by Monday morning.
A video of the incident, as shared on social media, showed huge flames on the highway.
Meanwhile, schools in Norwalk city remained closed on Friday, and Mayor Harry Rilling urged local employers to consider allowing employees to work from home, as it was unsafe to allow traffic to pass underneath the bridge in either direction.
Text alerts were sent to residents of Connecticut, New York and New Jersey, and trucking companies to find alternative routes and means of travel.
The tanker had been carrying a load of about 8,500 gallons (about 32,000 litres) when it crashed beneath the Fairfield Avenue bridge, officials told the Associated Press.
The cause of the crash remains unclear, while investigations were underway.
In April 2023, another fuel truck caught fire after colliding with a stopped car on the Gold Star Memorial Bridge between New London and Groton.
The crash shut down the southbound side of the bridge for hours, while the northbound side was closed briefly.
