Bangladeshi security forces arrested a top commander of a tribal militant group, believed to have links with an Islamic terrorist organisation, during a raid at his residence, where he was found hiding inside a locker.

Cheosim Bom’s arrest on Sunday came days after his Kuki-Chin National Front (KNF) outfit robbed state-owned banks and also abducted a bank manager last week. The manager was released three days later following mediation.

He was arrested by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), the anti-terrorism unit of the Bangladesh Police.

A regional RAB officer said Cheosim Bom, believed to be a key organiser and coordinator of the insurgent group, was “found hiding inside a locked locker” during the raid at his residence located on the outskirts of Bandarban town.

The officer said the arrested commander is a close aide of KNF chief Nathan Bom, a fugitive.

The development comes amid an ongoing Bangladesh military crackdown against the KNF in Bandarban in an effort to eliminate the insurgent group.

In 2023, the KNF killed three soldiers in Bandarban.

The KNF aims to establish a separate autonomous state for the Christian-majority ethnic Bom community.
