Former President Donald Trump met billionaire businessman Elon Musk in Florida over the weekend to discuss fundraising for his latest re-election campaign, The New York Times reported on Tuesday.
Trump met Musk and some rich Republican donors in Palm Beach on Sunday.
The New York Times didn’t name three people present at Sunday’s private meeting who provided the inputs.
He wants to talk directly with Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX and the owner-executive chairman of X (formerly Twitter), soon, reported the NYT.
MUSK’S FINANCIAL INFLUENCE
Trump, facing financial setbacks from legal battles in a New York civil fraud case and a separate defamation trial, is seeking additional major contributors for his presidential campaign, according to the NYT.
Musk, whose net worth is estimated at around $200 billion by Forbes, could single-handedly counterbalance Biden’s financial advantage in the 2024 general election campaign.
While Musk hasn’t confirmed financial support for Trump, he has hinted at opposing President Joe Biden, the Democrat who defeated Donald Trump in the 2020 presidential election, for a potential second term through social media posts.
Musk has been attacking the current administration on its immigration programme, saying Biden has been “importing voters”.
Despite his considerable wealth, Musk has maintained a politically independent stance and has evenly donated to both Democrats and Republicans in the past, according to the NYT.
Neither Musk nor Trump’s campaign has responded to requests for comment on the meeting, reported the NYT.
