A man in England’s Barnsley mixed his own sperm with his father’s, to get his partner pregnant. The man and his partner, both of whom were not named for legal reasons, experienced fertility problems and were not able to afford the IVF treatment, a report with the Guardian stated.

He agreed to mix his sperm with his father’s, which was injected into the woman.

In a court hearing last month, it was ruled that the Barnsley council did not hold the right to force the man to take a DNA test to determine the parentage of his son, who was now five years old.

The court was also informed that the arrangement was “always intended” to be kept a secret.

However, the Barnsley council launched a legal bid to determine the man’s parentage after it became aware of the circumstances of the boy’s conception as a result of separate proceedings.

Dismissing the bid, the judge said that he found the council had “no stake in the outcome”.

“It may wish to know who is the boy’s biological father, but it has no stake in the outcome of its application,” the judge said.

The judge concluded that the family may wish to undergo a paternity test to tell the child at a later date “but that is a matter for them”.

The judge also said the man had an established father-and-son relationship with the child, and it was up to him and the boy’s mother to “manage the latent risks to his welfare”.
