Based on the Urdu short story ‘Aanandi’ by Pakistani writer Ghulam Abbas. Mandi The Marketplace deals with a brothel at the located in the heart of a city. Some politicians of the district want the place for its prime location. They mask their personal gains and protest against the brothel in the name of morality. The politicians offer to put up an alternative residence for the prostitutes, only this place is miles away, isolated from the city. Will the Rukmini Bai (Shabana Azmi) and the other workers of the Brothel agree? Nitish Roy won the 1984 National Film Award for Best Art Direction. Mandi was also invited to the Los Angeles Exposition (FILMEX) and the London Film Festival 1983.
