An Israeli air strike on a refugee camp in central Gaza killed at least 70 people, the health ministry in Hamas-run Gaza said on Sunday. According to Palestinian health ministry spokesman Ashraf al-Qidra, houses in the Al-Maghazi camp were destroyed in the strike, news agency AFP reported.
The death toll was likely to climb given the large number of families residing at the camp, and the incident was a “massacre”, he said.
“What is happening at the Maghazi camp is a massacre that is being committed on a crowded residential square,” news agency Reuters quoted al-Qidra as saying. Israel’s military spokesperson’s office said it is looking into the report.
Hamas also issued a statement and termed the incident a “horrific massacre” and said it was “a new war crime.”
The development comes after residents and Palestinian media said that Israel bombed areas of Jabalia in the northern Gaza Strip overnight.
A Gaza health ministry spokesman said on Sunday 166 Palestinians had been killed in the past 24 hours, taking the total Palestinian death toll to 20,424.
