Bangladesh and Pakistan strengthen maritime ties as second cargo ship docks at Chittagong

Bangladesh interim leader Muhammad Yunus is pushing for improved ties with Pakistan in a significant move to enhance diplomatic and trade relations. This effort comes in the wake of recent developments highlighting closer maritime connections, marked by the arrival of the second cargo ship from Pakistan at Chittagong Port.

The ‘MV Yuan Xiang Fa Zhan’ docked at Chittagong carrying approximately 811 containers filled with various industrial materials and goods. The vessel’s journey started in Karachi, Pakistan, and included a stop in Dubai, UAE, before reaching its destination in Bangladesh. This development follows an earlier agreement between Yunus and Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in Cairo.

The cargo ship’s arrival underscores the establishment of direct maritime links between the two countries. This milestone was achieved when a previous cargo ship from Karachi successfully docked at Chattogram in November, marking the first-ever direct shipping connection between Bangladesh and Pakistan.

Bangladeshi traders are reportedly being encouraged to import goods from Pakistan, which can foster greater economic collaboration. Bangladeshi officials have also expressed the need to review India’s existing shipping pact, which currently grants India access to Chittagong and Mongla ports. This review may reflect a strategic shift in regional trade dynamics, particularly considering the geopolitical landscape of South Asia.

Yunus has been a vocal critic of Sheikh Hasina’s administration, which has favoured pro-India policies and taken a more cautious stance towards Pakistan. Under Hasina’s leadership, Indian officials have kept a close watch on the maritime routes connecting to Chittagong, primarily due to security concerns and the resurgence of Islamist extremism in Bangladesh.

Bangladesh also recently removed the clause requiring the physical inspection of Pakistani cargo, a move that signifies a thawing relationship and a willingness to facilitate trade.
