US President-elect Donald Trump has once again referred to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as “governor” after the surprise resignation of his deputy and Finance Minister threw his government into disarray. Chrystia Freeland resigned unexpectedly on Monday, citing differences with Trudeau, who is facing opposition from within his own party, as well as the prospect of a trade war with the US.

In a social media post, Trump, who has vowed to impose hefty tariffs on goods from Canada, said Freeland’s behaviour was “totally toxic”, and not conducive to making deals.

“The Great State of Canada is stunned as the Finance Minister resigns, or was fired, from her position by Governor Justin Trudeau. Her behaviour was totally toxic, and not at all conducive to making deals which are good for the very unhappy citizens of Canada. She will not be missed,” the US President-elect said.

Trump has been teasing Trudeau by calling him “governor” after he quipped during a recent meeting that Canada should become the 51st US state if it can’t handle aggressive US tariffs. Trump made the offer during a meeting with Trudeau last month.

The Trump-Trudeau meeting came after the US President-elect asserted that he would impose 25% tariffs on Canada for allegedly failing to arrest the flow of illegal immigrants and drugs into the US.

Meanwhile, the resignation of Chrystia Freeland has spurred another round of calls from Canadian leaders for Trudeau to step down. Five sitting Liberal MPs have publicly called on Trudeau, who has been facing declining approval ratings amid a housing crisis and high inflation, to step down.

In her explosive resignation letter to Trudeau, Freeland said the two have been “at odds about the best path forward for Canada”, and pointed to the “grave challenge” posed by Trump’s policy of “aggressive economic nationalism”.
