Donald Trump arrived at a Wisconsin rally in a garbage truck. It read ‘Trump’. He knows how to make a show. This was after US President Joe Biden called his supporters “garbage” that Trump saw an opportunity to come with props and a vest. People took notice of both. Biden’s comments and Trump’s efforts to call it out and sway the elections in his favour.
This was also the time when Vice President and Democratic Presidential candidate, Kamala Harris was addressing a high-profile rally in front of the White House. She was addressing Latinos.
US ELECTIONS, GARBAGE GAFFE AND A STINK
But the elections were about to take an interesting turn.
The statement by Biden would put his VP and Presidential candidate, Kamala Harris, in a tough spot.
Biden responded to a joke by a comedian about Puerto Rico being a “floating island of garbage”, made by comedian Tony Hinchcliffe at Trump’s Madison Square Garden rally.
“I don’t — I — I don’t know the Puerto Rican that — that I know — or a Puerto Rico, where I’m fr- — in my home state of Delaware, they’re good, decent, honourable people,” he said, reported ABC.
This brought no trouble for the President. But what he would say next would bring trouble for him.
“The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporters — his — his demonisation of Latinos is unconscionable, and it’s un-American.”
What followed was an attack on Biden’s statements by Trump in three battleground states in the US. This happened at a time when both candidates see a tie in the polls in battleground states in the US.
Trump was in the swing state of Pennsylvania when he was informed about Biden’s statement.
Florida senator Marco Rubio delivered this news to Trump at his rally.
“That’s terrible,” Trump said. “Remember Hillary, she said “deplorable”… that didn’t work out. ‘Garbage’ I think is worse, right?”
He compared it to Hillary Clinton’s 2016 where she called his supporters a “basket of deplorables”.
Trump told people at his rally how this was a sign of what Harris and Biden really think of Trump supporters.
Biden “finally said what he and Kamala really think of our supporters,” said Trump in a North Carolina rally.
But this was not it.
TRUMP EMERGES WITH A VEST, PROPS AND A TRUCK
At Trump’s next rally in Wisconsin, he came out of his plane in an orange vest and walked straight into a garbage truck with a Trump campaign sign on it.
His team had arranged for it.
“How do you like my garbage truck?” he asked. “This truck is in honour of Kamala and Joe Biden.”
This was a way for Trump to tell his supporters that he is on their side even when Biden and Harris think they are garbage.
The image stayed with many.
They have heard Trump’s message loud and clear and even took to social media to share it.
“Some “garbage” just voted for Trump today,” wrote an X user.
“My Garbage ass voted for the 34 x felon and protector, Donald J. Trump,” wrote another.
For some people, the comment was intolerable.
“My brother died in combat in Iraq during Biden’s disastrous withdrawal. He was also a Trump supporter. He was not garbage.” wrote an user.
People have also noticed how Trump is going all-out to win the US elections in 2024.
“Joe Biden calls millions of Americans “garbage.” The next day, Trump gets picked up in Green Bay, Wisconsin by a garbage truck. He’s playing chess. They’re playing checkers,” wrote a US-based journalist, Alana Mastrangelo.
HARRIS DISTANCES HERSELF FROM BIDEN. BUT WILL THAT BE ENOUGH?
As for Harris, she has tried to distance herself from Biden since the beginning of her campaign.
She also distanced herself from Biden’s recent comment on Trump supporters.
“Donald Trump has spent a decade trying to keep the American people divided and afraid of each other,” she said. “I will always listen to you, even if you don’t vote for me,” she added.
This is an effort to reach out to Republican voters who do not like Trump.
“Let me be clear: I strongly disagree with any criticism of people based on who they vote for,” said Harris.
But voters in the US remain concerned.
“I’m not going to try to explain why he would say that, you know it could have been a slip or a gaffe on his part. That’s wrong,” Justin Warren, a Republican supporter, told ABC.
People should not be criticised for who they vote for, he said.
“I think silently there are a lot of Republicans that feel the same way I do,” he said.
This ‘garbage’ gaffe has caused a dent in the Harris campaign.
“The vast majority of us have so much more in common than what separates us,” Harris said in a North Carolina rally.
However, Trump has gained the tempo after Biden’s garbage gaffe, that too in the dying moments of the campaign. He is using trash as treasure in his attempt to seal the election against Harris.
