The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Thursday refused to confirm or deny a potential meeting between former US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi next week on the sidelines of the Quad summit. The MEA’s reaction came a day after the Republican presidential nominee claimed that he would meet PM Modi, whom he called “fantastic”, during his three-day US visit.

“PM has many meetings that we are trying to fix within the limited time,” the MEA spokesperson said.

PM Modi is scheduled to visit the US on a three-day trip to attend the sixth Quad Summit being held on September 21. The summit was initially supposed to be hosted by India, but the venue was moved at the US’s request.

The former president announced at a campaign rally in Michigan on September 17 that he would be meeting PM Modi during his visit, but gave no more details.

PM Modi and Trump last met in 2020 when the then US president visited India. The meeting was described by the Indian prime minister as a ‘path-breaking moment’ in fostering relations between the two nations.

This is a developing story. It will be updated.
