Supporters of former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan clashed with the police in Islamabad on Sunday during Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)’s rally in the city.
The party alleged “heavy shelling by Islamabad police on peaceful Pakistanis” during the rally, which was being held to demand Khan’s immediate release from jail.
Imran Khan was expected to walk out of prison this week after a local court held up appeals against his conviction in the Iddat case.
However, the former Pakistan cricket captain was arrested moments later by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in the Toshakhana case, a Dawn report said.
At the PTI rally on Sunday, party leader Hammad Azhar addressed the crowd and said that they had gathered to establish the “rule of law and the supremacy of the Constitution” in the country, the report further added.
Imran Khan, a 71-year-old former cricketer and politician, was arrested on August 5 last year. He was first held at Attock Jail, then moved to Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi. He faces over 200 cases and has been convicted in a few.
