Mike Gill, an official in former US President Donald Trump’s administration, passed away on Saturday in Washington DC after being shot by a carjacker earlier in the week, as reported by Fox 5 DC.

“It is with profound sadness that I wish to inform the community of the passing of my husband, Mike Gill,” his wife, Kristina Gill, said in a statement.

“His sudden departure has left a void in our lives that can never be filled,” she said as quoted by The New York Post.

Gill, who served as the chief operating officer of Commodity Futures Trading, was picking up his wife from work when 28-year-old Artell Cunningham entered his parked car outside an office building and shot him in the head at around 5:45 pm.

Witness Yolanda Douglas described seeing Gill sprawled on the pavement with blood around his head and a woman frantically identifying him as her husband before running to his side.

After the shooting, Cunningham fled on foot and was involved in a series of car thefts and confrontations with law enforcement officers, culminating in a fatal shootout with New Carrollton police officers.

Officials suspect that Cunningham’s actions were the result of a mental breakdown.
